Safety fears have been raised by the gun attack on the Togo team bus in Angola just before the African Cup of Nations.
Two members of the Togolese delegation were killed in the ambush, along with the bus driver.
South Africa officials have repeated their pledge that similar outrages will not be allowed to happen at the World Cup. Danny Jordaan, chief executive of the organising committee, said South Africa should be judged by its own record, not events more than a four-hour flight away.
Speaking at a crowded news conference, Jordaan dismissed questions about the possibility of terrorism in South Africa as "flights of fantasy and imagination." He added South Africa has safely hosted more than 100 major sporting events since 1994.
Meanwhile, a second separatist group has claimed responsibility for the Togo bus attack, in which a number of people were also injured. The players still wanted to take part in the Cup of Nations as a tribute to their colleagues but were ordered back home by the government.
